How Do You Want to Feel When You Finish Work This Year?
How on earth have we landed here already? Less than ten weeks until Christmas. I know, right? Your calendar is filled to the brim. Priorities are competing for your attention daily. Your energy might be wavering.
Over the past few months, I've written about the power of space: thinking space, emotional space, and strategic space - the kind that allows for steady, deliberate leadership rather than reactivity. Thinking space is not decision delay; it's powerful preparation.
In mid-October, it's time for you to hit pause and ask yourself:
What is the source of the current pressure I feel?
What is capturing my attention, and what truly deserves my time?
How do I want to feel when I finish work for the year - and what will get me there?
Hint: these questions are designed to allow you to lead with a broader perspective and clear intention. That's what I want for you in the next nine weeks.
As I'm writing this update, I've come from an online conversation with Brené Brown (and 1,000+ of our mates) about her new book, Strong Ground. My key takeaway from Brown's insights is something I've regularly heard myself say this quarter, so it came as no surprise. But it was affirming.
Brown shared that in a world overwhelmed by change, transformation and disquiet, the most valuable and essential trait for leaders right now is to be predictable. A source of constancy, calm, and consistency for teams (and I'd add, for ourselves).
If you can give yourself the gift of asking the questions I have posed above, you'll find space to reflect on your predictability and how measured you are in your leadership. This may be your nudge to calm the waters before the seasonal break.
For me, the next nine weeks are focused on the outcomes of the last quarter's rich conversations; closing off some client relationships, and cementing work that's been booked for February-June 2026. I'm excited about my agenda for next year, and I will share more in January!
Last quarter started with a road trip to Stanthorpe in Queensland, to see my niece and her family, who are taking a 'gap year' on their off-grid property, away from their usual home on the Gold Coast. We chose to leave Victoria for a part of Queensland that had a colder Winter than Gippsland - not our most brilliant move! Despite sleet and the beginnings of snow in the New England region, we had a magnificent time with my two grand-nieces, exploring and telling tall tales. A mid-year break is so good for the soul.
In August, I started work with several new clients. I noted strong interest from new senior leaders, especially in understanding their emotional intelligence abilities, and the traits they need to amplify. This kind of work is what I love most: giving people insights into how they can lead even more effectively.
I attended the Regional Australia Institute's Regions Rising Conference at Federation University Gippsland, which was a chance to reconnect with many former and new colleagues. A treat!
I continued my involvement with the International Women's Forum Australia Emerging Women Leaders Program, which has been fulfilling and rewarding in many ways, especially in meeting younger women leaders from across wider Melbourne.
Another highlight was speaking at the Victorian Municipal Building Surveyors Women's Network for their September event. Fabulous questions, an engaged audience, and a professional group I loved learning more about.
This quarter, I've worked more in Melbourne and balanced this with increased exercise and health practices, which have had a positive impact on me. Here's another nudge for you: take your health seriously in the next couple of months and practice deep self-care. It's imperative in your leadership.
In between, I've continued working on my new book, which is taking shape. The photo shoot is done, the graphics are underway, and I'm sourcing some other delicious pieces to add to the mix. It's going to be so different, and I almost can't contain my excitement! Stay tuned for pre-order details very soon.
My message to you in this quarterly update is this: find a rhythm that feels steady and kind for the next nine weeks. Create some space to think. Leave room for rest and curiosity. Create as much certainty for yourself and your team as you can.
Get in touch if you'd like to work with me in 2026 (be quick), and as always, go gently.
